BSMCC Club Ride - Palmwoods

April 22, 2007.

by Rob Mutimer

An interesting selection of bikes left Chermside heading north to Palmwoods, with Adrian riding his BSA, leading the way. From Chermside we headed for Dayboro, over Mt.Mee and on to Woodford, where we stopped for morning tea. At Woodford Brian discovered that the magneto mount on the Ariel had broken and he was able to effect a temporary repair, but unfortunately he and Leslie had to leave us and limp home. Glen and Doug missed the start but caught us at Woodford, where Doug with broken a clutch cable, found his spare did not fit. A helpful resident with a workshop was able to repair the broken cable, but the rest of us left them to sort it out and again catch up. From Woodford we travelled toward Beerwah turning off at Peachester, to Maleny and then onto Palmwoods, where we had lunch at the hotel.

Around 1.30pm. we departed from Palmwoods but unfortunately Glen and Doug still playing catch up after the clutch cable repair, arrived after we had left. Our ride continued down through Eudlo to Landsborough where a mix up resulted in the party splitting and going their separate ways home. I was in a group that rode back up to Maleny, past Mary Cairncross Park (always a spectacular outlook) and then retraced our steps to Woodford, over Mt.Mee, down to Dayboro and home. A couple of interesting bikes on the ride were: - Ross Fleming (Brian and Lesley’s son) was riding a 1938 Ariel Red Hunter that was immaculate, didn’t drop oil and was ridden quite enthusiastically, having no trouble keeping up with the more modern bikes - this bike would be a good subject for a future magazine article. Mike Farrell (yes, he of racing and tuning fame) was on an immaculate 1964 BSA A65 Spitfire, complete with the big red fibreglass tank, alloy wheels, Siamese exhaust and Goldie muffler. Not only did it look great but also sounded and went very well.

This was a good ride over hilly, winding roads. Our thanks to Adrian for organising this run, and to Terry for being the sweep rider at the rear..
