BSMCC Club Ride - Centurion Rally
August 26, 2007.
by Rob Mutimer
The Club ride on Sunday, August 26, was in joint participation with the HMCCQ for
the Centurion Rally.
The combined ages of the motorcycle and rider must total at least 100 years.
Brisbane experienced heavy rain during the week leading up to the Event. Showers were even forecast
for the Sunday. However it turned out to be a perfect day! The starting point was the Beenleigh Historical
Village where tea and coffee were available while we registered. Entries were down, probably due to
the threat of rain, but there were many beautiful bikes present.
After leaving the start, we had an interesting 25kms, including crossing the freeway (fully marshalled
on the corners), ending up behind the Mobil Garage at Dreamworld for morning tea. The HMCCQ Brisbane
ladies provided a delicious array of biscuits and cakes to accompany tea and coffee, while we admired
the bikes and chatted with old mates.
The riders chose either a Short Course (a leisurely run around the flat twisty roads of Jacobs Well best suited to the older bikes), or the Long Course (for more spritely bikes), up to Tamborine, down to Canungra, through Tamborine Village and back to the Historical Village for lunch. I was riding the 1934 Velocette MOV (250cc) and in a fit of optimism booked myself into the Long Course. I inadvertently, and fortunately, went the wrong way when I followed the Short Course riders! I think the MOV would have been a hazard on the longer course!
Lunch, consisting of
steak sandwiches (provided by the Historical Village) and cut up fruit (from the HMCCQ ladies), was
enjoyable. This was followed by the presentations of trophies, with the winner being Barry Deeth
on his immaculate 1929 Ariel 550cc Side Valve Single.
